South Africa is currently under several weather alerts as warnings have been issued across multiple provinces for potentially severe weather conditions. These warnings include damaging winds, disruptive rainfall, and severe thunderstorms. The affected regions span five provinces, with six active yellow-level warnings in place. Among these, three are categorized as Yellow Level 4, indicating a higher level of risk.
One of the significant warnings concerns damaging winds and waves along the coastline stretching from Alexander Bay in the Northern Cape to Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape. This warning highlights possible threats to ports, harbors, and marine navigation in these areas. A separate Yellow Level 4 warning focuses on other parts of the Northern Cape and Western Cape, where strong winds may cause damage to infrastructure, temporary structures, and utilities. Additionally, parts of the Western Cape face a Level 4 warning for disruptive rainfall, which could lead to flooding and significantly impact roads, settlements, and traffic flow.
In addition to these, three Yellow Level 2 warnings are currently active. The Eastern Cape coast and its eastern regions are expected to experience disruptive rainfall. Meanwhile, severe thunderstorms are anticipated in the western areas of the Free State, posing risks such as strong winds, hail, lightning, and falling trees. Another Yellow Level 2 warning has been issued for damaging winds, affecting the western regions of the Western Cape and the northern interior areas of the Eastern Cape. This could lead to potential impacts on temporary structures, settlements, and transport routes.
The South African Weather Service has also highlighted an extremely high fire danger in central parts of the country, notably affecting much of KwaZulu-Natal. Residents and authorities in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to mitigate the risks posed by these severe weather conditions.
