This survey, which gathered insights from 2,400 travellers across 12 different countries, highlighted that a significant 72% of respondents prioritize wildlife experiences when selecting a vacation spot. This growing interest in nature-based travel is also evident in digital behavior, with online searches for “wildlife holidays” soaring by an impressive 211% over the past year.
Australia emerged as the top choice in this survey, with South Africa following closely in second place, surpassing well-known wildlife destinations such as Kenya, Canada, and China. South Africa’s allure lies in its diverse ecosystems and abundant biodiversity, offering a wide range of experiences from the iconic Big Five safaris to whale watching, birding, and interactions with African penguins. These varied offerings continue to draw tourists eager for immersive encounters with nature.

Globally, certain animals have captured the imagination of travellers wishing to see them in their natural habitats. The giant panda leads this list of most-desired wildlife sightings, followed closely by elephants, kangaroos, koalas, and whales. Among Africa’s renowned Big Five, the elephant is the only species that made it to the global top five, highlighting its universal appeal.
