As South Africa gears up for its local government elections on November 4, the African National Congress (ANC) is poised to reveal its nominee for Johannesburg mayor. The city is set to be a hotly contested battleground among the metropolitan municipalities, with the ANC currently at the helm through a coalition, and Dada Morero holding the position of executive mayor. However, Morero’s prospects of continuing as the ANC’s choice for mayor have been clouded by his loss of the Greater Johannesburg regional chairperson role in 2025, prompting the party to initiate a broader selection process after an initial nomination did not align with national criteria.
A prominent figure in the running for the ANC’s mayoral candidate is Reverend Frank Chikane, who has gained traction following interviews with several potential candidates conducted by the party. Meanwhile, other political parties have already confirmed their candidates for the upcoming election. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have put forward Dr. Tlaleng Mofokeng, while ActionSA has opted for former Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba. The Democratic Alliance (DA) has chosen Helen Zille, known for her past roles as Cape Town mayor and Western Cape premier.
In addition to these major players, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has nominated Mlungisi Mabaso as their candidate. Other parties such as Rise Mzansi, BOSA, the Land Party, and Al Jama-ah have also declared their contenders for the mayoral race, setting the stage for a diverse political contest.
The election discourse is anticipated to revolve around critical issues pertinent to Johannesburg’s residents, including the delivery of essential services, infrastructure development, water and electricity provision, housing, crime reduction, and the enhancement of local economic conditions. These topics are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping voter decisions, as parties vie to address the needs and concerns of the city’s populace.
