South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has unequivocally denounced violence against women, labeling it a national disgrace that should never be considered part of the country’s heritage. Speaking during the National Heritage Day celebration in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape, Ramaphosa emphasized that South Africa’s heritage should embody values of dignity, equality, and respect, alongside its diverse languages, traditions, and customs.

Ramaphosa addressed the ongoing issue of gender-based violence and the alarming rates of abuse, rape, and femicide in South Africa. He stated that women must have the freedom to move safely without fear of violence, asserting that no cultural tradition should compromise their dignity. His remarks highlight the persistent challenges South Africa faces in tackling gender-based violence and the recent killings of women, particularly in areas around Ekurhuleni.

The president announced that the government would soon provide an update on the measures being taken to address these issues, including the ongoing investigations into recent violent incidents. He called for collective action to combat not only gender-based violence but also other societal problems such as unemployment, corruption, and substance abuse.

Ramaphosa urged South Africans to unite under the principles of unity, ubuntu, and human dignity to foster a safer and more inclusive society. By focusing on these values, he believes the nation can effectively address its challenges and create a future where all citizens feel respected and secure.
