South Africa Aims to End Electricity Load Reduction by March 2027

by admin477351

South Africa is making significant progress toward ending electricity load reduction, with a target completion date of March 2027, according to Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa. The reduction in affected customers is notable, decreasing from approximately 1.4 million to 247,617. However, the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng still face challenges where load-reduction measures remain necessary.

The initiative to eliminate load reduction involves collaboration between the South African government, Eskom, and local municipalities. Efforts include upgrading electrical networks, installing smart meters, addressing illegal connections, and expanding access to free basic electricity. Load reduction specifically aims to prevent local electricity networks from overloading and is distinct from the broader national issue of load shedding.

In addition to tackling load reduction, the government is conducting a comprehensive review of the electricity pricing system, expected to conclude by January 2027. This review will consider proposals for providing free basic electricity to qualifying households, with potential support ranging between 200kWh and 300kWh.

Minister Ramokgopa’s remarks underscore the government’s commitment to improving energy reliability and affordability across South Africa. The ongoing efforts reflect a broader strategy to enhance infrastructure and ensure equitable access to electricity for all citizens.
