Meta’s introduction of an artificial intelligence-driven image generation tool on Instagram has ignited privacy debates, as the feature allows users to create AI-generated images using photos from public Instagram profiles by default. Known as Muse Image, the tool lets users input prompts referencing public Instagram accounts to develop tailored AI images. Privacy advocates express concern, suggesting that many users might be unaware that their publicly available photos could be utilized in this manner, especially since the feature is automatically enabled.
In response to these concerns, Meta has emphasized the presence of safety measures within the tool, highlighting that private accounts and users under 18 are excluded from participation. Public account holders, however, do have the option to opt out by adjusting their privacy settings under the “Sharing and Reuse” section. Critics argue that this opt-out setting is not easily accessible, and they contend that users should have been given the opportunity to opt in, rather than having their content automatically available for AI image generation.
The unease extends further, as some advocates worry that photos posted by adults could inadvertently include images of children, thus allowing their likenesses to be incorporated into AI-generated content. This concern arises despite the existing protections specifically for accounts belonging to users under 18.
Meta has stated that Muse Image is equipped with safeguards designed to prevent misuse and provides mechanisms for users to report any inappropriate AI-generated content. Currently, the feature is accessible through the Meta AI app, Instagram Stories in the United States, and WhatsApp in selected international markets, with intentions for broader availability in the future.
