Johannesburg residents are preparing for a planned power outage as part of essential maintenance work aimed at enhancing the reliability of the city’s electricity network. Scheduled for Saturday, 26 September 2026, the outage will impact several neighborhoods, necessitating residents to make advance arrangements.

The primary locations affected include the Orlando Switching Station and the Mayfair Substation. Both sites will undergo maintenance to ensure the long-term stability of the power supply. At the Orlando Switching Station, the power interruption will occur from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, impacting areas such as Nobel Street, Industria North, Bunsen Street, Slovo Crosby No. 1 and 2, Industria West, Bosmond Maraisburg, Maraisburg Road, and Vegr Street Feeder Nos. 1, 2, and 3, as well as Lowenthal.

Meanwhile, the Mayfair Substation will experience a slightly longer outage, lasting from 9:00 am until 5:30 pm. This will affect the neighborhoods of Mayfair, Crown, Amalgam, Amalgam Standby, and Vredepark. Residents in these areas are advised to plan accordingly to mitigate any inconvenience caused by the temporary loss of electricity.

The maintenance work is part of a broader strategy to address potential issues within the electricity network and to prevent unplanned outages in the future. By conducting these scheduled interruptions, the city’s utility providers aim to ensure a more consistent and reliable power supply for Johannesburg’s residents.

As the date approaches, affected residents are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions, such as ensuring backup power sources or planning activities around the outage times. The effort highlights the ongoing challenges and necessary upkeep required to maintain a robust electrical infrastructure in a major urban center like Johannesburg.
